Sunday School Lesson for Dec. 12, 2010: The Lord Is Our God (Isaiah 41:8-10, 17-20; 42:1-4, 9)

Isaiah 41:17
17-20"The poor and homeless are desperate for water,
their tongues parched and no water to be found.
But I'm there to be found, I'm there for them,
and I, God of Israel, will not leave them thirsty.
James 1:27

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Amos 5:24

But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

Matthew 5:2-10
2 and he began to teach them.
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Notice the verses above (Matt 5:-2-10). There are two distinct groups of people in the Beatitudes: the helpless and the helpers. God is with them both. And it’s apparently kind of a closed loop; God, the helpless and the helpers or … servants! No one else is there, not the rich, the privileged, the good, the bad, the what-ever-other-category-you can-think-of. The helpless, the servant, God. Are you in the loop? Have you surrendered your will, your way, your self to Him? Did you come to the end of your road? When did you find out that you couldn’t do it on your own and that you needed… help? Help! Help! When did you answer the knock at the door of your heart and open it to… Jesus? If you haven’t, now is the time! Tomorrow’s not promised to you! Answer the door. Let Him in… He’ll do the rest. His yoke is easy, His burden is light.
If you are His… are you engaged? Are you serving… someone… somewhere? Are you fighting the good fight? The one where your weapons are not physical. No guns, no knives, no harsh words. This is the fight where you turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, literally give the shirt off your back (Matt: 5:39-42). This is the fight where you love your neighbor and.. your enemy and you pray for them. I’m not talking about just showing up in church every Sunday and shouting and singing and all that. That’s alright, there’s a place for all that. No, I’m talking about the fight where the Gospel, the Good News is furthered by your personal example. Do people see Jesus in you; in your words and your actions? I hope so. Because the helpless and the servants of God enjoy a special place of blessing and favor with God. I want you to be in that place Beloved. Have a Blessed Holiday. Enjoy the lesson.

2 Corinthians 10:4
3-6The world is unprincipled. It's dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.

Acts 17:31
For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man (Jesus Christ) he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

A little something extra from Edmund D.’s weekly email. I Hope this blesses you as it did me. Thanks Edmund!
